Summer Field Meet - Weekend 21st - 22nd
June 2003
North Pembrokeshire - Coal & Slate.
Based at the Gellifawr Hotel,
Pontfaen, Nr. Fishguard, Pembs. Organiser; Peter Claughton
As to the programme of events, this was as follows:

Saturday 21st June - Met at
11:00 a.m. at the Victoria Hall carpark in Roch behind the Victoria
Inn, opposite the school, NGR SM 8715 2145 (View
OS Map) Exploration of the Newgale coalfield; mining from the
late medieval to the early 20th century, with local geological
expertise on hand to explain the geological aspects of this small outlier
at the extreme north-west of the main Pembrokeshire coalfield.

Saturday Evening - Dinner at the Gellifawr Hotel. Menu
A presentation was given by Tery Evans on the Welsh Mines Preservation
Trust, afetr which there was some discussion regarding the pro's and con's
of merging the Trust with the WMS.

Sunday 22nd June - Met
at 10:30 a.m. at the carpark in Rosebush. (Turn left in front
of the Old Post Office Restaurant.)NGR SN 0750 2945 (View
OS Map) Morning visit to Rosebush and Bellstone Quarries; 19th
century slate working. (View
field notes) Lunch was available at the cafe in the village.
In the afternoon many took the option of a visit to the quarries and associated
harbour at Porthgain, 9 miles west of Fishguard. After exploring
the trackbeds of the railway serving the slate quarry and the roadstone
quarry and their associated remains, those of slightly sterner constitution
continued along the cliff tops to the flooded slate quarry at Abereiddy.
