Autumn Field Meet - Weekend, 17th-18th September
2005.
North Ceredigion - The Mines of the Mine Adventurers, c.1700.
The Silver Mines of Mid-Wales.
(Esgair Hir, Cwmystwyth & elsewhere)
Based at the Dyffryn Castell Hotel, Ponterwyd. Organisers:
David
Bick & George Hall
As to the programme of events, this was as follows:
-
Saturday - Cwmystwyth.
To
include the ancient stamping mill, (for those fit enough to make the ascent),
and Waller’s actual accounts of working costs - which have only just come
to light thanks to Roger Bird. These are a revelation.
Met at 11:00, at Cwmystwyth, NGR SN 805 746 (View
OS Map) Leader : David Bick & others.
-
Sunday
- Talybont. For those keen to go underground, Roy Fellows
had arranged to take those suitably experienced and equiped into part of
the Talybont mines. An easy SRT decent followed by waist deep water
took folk into a unique feature in Wales, that of an underground whim circle.
- Esgair Hir. The opportunity was taken to draw attention
to a serious blunder in Waller’s Description of the Mines in Cardiganshire,
Blaen Cwmsymlog, Hafan, Bwlch and Pencgraigddu. Met at 10:00,
at Esgairhir, NGR SN 723 912 (View
OS Map) Leader : David Bick & others.
