Gearbox, Transfer Box, Overdrive & Clutch

Over the years, LandRover upgraded the design of the gearbox fitted to the Series Landrovers.  My experience is essentially with those of the Series II & IIA.  The Series III box was of similar construction, but has synchromesh on all four forward gears, and uses a different bell housing and clutch release mechanism/bearing.  The strongest box fitted to a series LandRover was the later suffix D & E boxes as fitted to the IIA's, and is allegedly good for 140 bhp.  I've run a 3,528 cc Rover V8 through standard boxes since September 1988, (~100,000 miles) with three failures - two of which required a tow home.
  1. Collapse of rear bearing (cylindrical roller) on layshaft of Suffix A G/Box - Pre-failure symptom:  Noise, particularly in lower ratio and reverse, plus parts of bearing in oil !
  2. Shearing of drive dog/teeth between Xfer box output shaft and high ratio gear - Pre-failure symptom:  Xfer box jumping out of drive into neutral when in Hi Ratio.
  3. Shearing of mainshaft - Pre-failure symptom:  None !
